Languedoc-Roussillon trails Sweden’s 9th city for job vacancies

Expat jobseekers beware! Languedoc-Roussillon lags behind the ninth largest city in Sweden in a league table of available jobs in the European Union (EU).

Data collected by the EU employment service, Eures, shows Languedoc-Roussillon has 1,796 job vacancies. This puts the region 78th out of 212 in a league table of EU job vacancies. Just above Languedoc-Roussillon in 77th is the Swedish city of Jönköping.

Described on Wikipedia as the ’9th most populous city of Sweden’, Jönköping had 89,396 inhabitants in 2010, according to Statistics Sweden. In contrast, Languedoc-Roussillon is widely reported to have a population of upwards of 2.5m. The difference in job availability is horribly apparent when vacancies per 10,000 inhabitants is calculated. Jönköping has 202, Languedoc-Roussillon has 7.

The finding will be of little surprise to observers of unemployment levels in the region. Unemployment in Montpellier has been well above the national average since at least 2003 and the picture in the surrounding areas is no better. A 2011 visualisation in Le Monde displays a sea of red around Languedoc-Roussillon to show its 10%+ unemployment rate.

Another visualisation, this time from UK-broadsheet The Guardian, was used to display the Eures vacancy data. The interactive visualisation – available here - shows how France compares to other countries in the EU. Focusing in on France shows how Languedoc-Roussillon compares to other regions.

Drilling down into the data shows Languedoc-Roussillon compares favourably, in terms of raw numbers of vacancies, to many other regions of France. Languedoc-Roussillon is ranked 10th out of 24 regions, but some its rivals have considerably smaller populations.

Despite the less than reassuring data there are jobs for expats in Montpellier and the surrounding areas of Languedoc-Roussillon. We covered a handful of multinational firms with operations in Montpellier in an earlier article and will take a deeper look at the ins and outs of finding work in Languedoc-Roussillon at a later date.
