‘Tis almost Christmas and our social calendar is filled up with events for everyone and every budget, Evi Tsirigotaki reports. Here we have prepared our own countdown highlighting fun and unique events happening in Montpellier and the neighboring towns.

La Bohéme (Opera Comedie) 21, 23, 26, 28, 30/12 and 1/1/2013

The controversial Opera director, Jean-Paul Scarpitta, takes on the staging of Puccini’s classic opera La Bohéme.

And on the last evening of the year…

Circus, magic and music at the Domaine d’O

Three years ago, the director of the Domaine d’O, Christopher Grimes, an Englishman, decided to shake up things by offering an alternative New Year’s evening for the whole family. For the final hours of the 2012, the Domaine will be turned into a magical forest with fairies, monsters and circus people.

The evening (8pm) kicks off with Cirkus Cirkor, a Swedish troupe, and their show “Wear it like a Crown”. Illusions, shadow play, knife throwing, acrobatics, juggling and drama, the show is about ‘the transformation of risks into opportunities. It is about choosing to wear our failures, fears and shortcomings like a crown. To polish it, and wear it with pride.’ Rebekka Karijord, composer for Cirkus Cirkor.

At 8.30 and 10.45, the Anonima Teatro Company, a local theatre troupe originally formed in Paris, transform their hands into small puppets and curious sea creatures who narrate fantastical tales.

A jazzy, storytelling, slam, funk, hip-hop, concert follows with Lyon native Patrice Kalla and his band.

To bid adieu to 2012, the Maxi Monster Music Show, inspired by Tod Browing’s cult film classic Freaks, and in the tradition of the historical Barnum & Bailey circus, will take the public on a journey to the magical and curious world of circus sideshows. Tim Burton fans rejoice!

Kid-friendly events:

Throughout the holidays, pretty much every city, town and village in Languedoc Roussillon organises free events for the whole family. You can check the site of the Tourism Office for information on upcoming events.

Here are some suggestions:

The Theatre at Villeneuve-les-Maguelone has been specialising in children’s theatre featuring the work of many well known as well as emerging artists from all over Europe. On the 15th of December, the collective Soeurs Fusible (Fuse Sisters) will present Kid Palace whereby the theatre will be turned into a big nightclub…for kids, five years and older. There will be of course a giant flashmob, whose choreography is online. The ticket is 5 euros.

The Magical Forest at La Grande Motte

From the 14th of December the city is organizing a series of events for the whole family featuring concerts, storytelling, an arts and crafts market and workshops for kids.

The several children’s theatres as well as Nestor Burma and Diagonale cinemas have prepared a kids’ programme for the holidays. You can check the local papers for listings and screening times.
